At SHSCC we arrange regular visits to colleges, university and workplaces to show students what is available post 16. We also invite external companies to the college to deliver useful career workshops.

Students from all year groups are invited on these trips to help them explore a variety of career pathways so they can make informed decisions about their future.

Here are a few career trips and workshops our students have been on in the last few months:

April 2025

Students had the opportunity this week to visit The Inspiration Lab at a state-of-the-art global science research and development facility located in the heart of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Cambridge, one of the most exciting bioscience hotspots in the world, is home to the largest UK research and development centre – The DISC. Here more than 2,000 scientists work in drug discovery and development, across our therapy areas, each playing a central role in our mission to deliver life-changing medicines to patients.

Students toured the facility, learning how medicines are researched and tested. They also worked in the laboratory carrying out an experiment on chromatography. Students had a great day and the experience complemented their science provision in school.

March 2026

A group of Year 9 students visited Downing College at the University of Cambridge. During the morning, students had an introduction to universities, finding out about what subjects are available to study, the different types of university and life as a student.

They then walked to the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology where they took part in a ‘Museum of Me‘ workshop, looking at the role of museums in society, how museums use objects to represent other
cultures, and how objects can construct and display identity.

After lunch on the college green in glorious weather, students went on a tour of Downing College Campus, before having a Q&A with an Admissions Officer and current students.

February 2026 - National Apprenticeship Week

Our Year 12 and Year 13 students took part in a degree apprenticeship information workshop.

We took a group of Sixth Form students to Anglia Ruskin University for a Degree Apprenticeship Discovery Day which forms part of National Apprenticeship Week. Students had the opportunity to find out about apprenticeships, have a tour of the Anglia Ruskin University campus, investigate degree apprenticeships and listen to current apprentices who are studying at the university. They also had a session on Police Degree apprenticeships.

November 2025

A group of Year 9 students visited the head office of Cambridge Building Society to find out about careers that link with Maths.

Students had the opportunity to tour the site and facilities, and then to question a group of staff to see if they could find out what their jobs were, what was involved and what pathway they took to their current careers.

After, they played a very active ‘Game of Life’ where they had to work in teams to make real life decisions, whilst being given jobs, bills, investment opportunities and the chance to buy houses. This all involved using their Maths skills to determine which would be good decisions and which would be bad.

Students and staff had a thoroughly enjoyable day, and the building society praised the students as the best group they had ever had.
